- Aptera takes wraps off 200 MPG prototype car
Filed under: Transportation
It looks like last week's TED conference was the choice event for those jonesing for a more Jetson-like means of transportation, with Idealab company Aptera taking the opportunity to show off a prototype version of its sci-fi-inspired concept car. While it sadly remains grounded, the Aptera typ-1 does boast at least one significant innovation, promising to deliver a full 200 miles per gallon from its diesel-electric hybrid engine, keeping up a reasonable 55 mph pace all along the way. And while it's a one-off for now, Aptera apparently hopes that won't be the case for too long, with the company planning to sell these attention-grabbers for around $20,000 apiece. Exactly when, of course, they ain't sayin', but we wouldn't hold off any current car purchase plans in anticipation of driving off in one of these instead.

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
Accessory-maker SendStation looks to be trying to extend its tentacles to as many devices as possible with its latest iPod adapter, tying together a variety of audio and video connectors with its PocketDock AV. As you can see above, you'll get your choice of S-Video or composite video, with the usual left and right audio jacks pumping out the tunes, and a USB plug conveniently provided for syncing or charging your iPod. Detach the iPock dock unit and you can also use the cable to hook your 15 or 17-inch PowerBook up to a TV for some big screen viewing. Look for this one to be available direct from SendStation early next month for $36.95.

Proving that a desirable feature is better delivered late than never, TiVo has finally gotten around to releasing its TiVo Mobile remote scheduling program for select Verizon phones -- over a year after we first caught wind of the Java-based app. No real surprises here: you use Get It Now to download the application, and for $1.99 a month you get access to your Series2 or Series3 box through that familiar interface, along with special recommendation lists, popular show charts, and the always-hot "premium entertainment content." Not a bad deal considering that we once thought this would cost five bones a month, but the catch is that only certain handsets are currently compatible, including the SCH-a950, VX8300, and of course, the beloved Chocolate. Sure you could do the whole dial-a-recording before with your Pocket PC phone and Orb plug-in -- and that even lets you stream the swag you've taped -- but the more people who take the TiVo-approved route, the sooner we can put the kibosh on that nasty TiVo Deathwatch.

This streaming media receiver was unveiled at CES earlier this year, but Netgear's officially made it available for your living room. To refresh your memory, the Digital Entertainer HD (EVA8000) basically promises to do everything to amuse you short of growing limbs and break dancing on your coffee table. It's got an HDMI port with resolutions up to 1080p, connects to 802.11 b / g WiFi networks, and controls PC-PVR recordings remotely (with a not-included TV tuner card). It streams nearly anything, including HD movies, BitTorrent downloads, internet radio, RSS feeds, music, videos, and Flickr photos, from nearly any device, like your networked PCs, flash drives, iPods, or digital cameras. Netgear's right on point with their projected first quarter release -- units went on sale today on select e-commerce sites at around $399 a pop. The Digital Entertainer HD will be available at e-commerce sites, retailers, and resellers worldwide sometime in Q2 2007.

At risk of life and limb, we got up close and personal with Samsung's second generation UMPC: the
Q2Q1 Ultra. What did we find? Nothing, the Q1 Ultra, Ultra Mobile PC (so nice, they named it twice?) is exactly what we heard. Still, in what may be a first, this UMPC actually looks better in person than it does in the collateral. We couldn't actually get hands-on with the unit. For that we'll have to wait until tomorrow. We're dying to know about the chipset powering the Vista Home Premium pre-load. In the mean time, check the pics and official specs in the gallery below.
Update: We've spotted some detailed specs here. Oddly, the Q1 Ultra runs an 800MHz processor, compared to the Q1P's 1GHz. Prices are at $1,300 to $2,000 "depending on the processor," so we'll keep an eye out for other options.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
We've been trying to lay low in hopes that this horrible trend of sticking tacky looking crystals to otherwise innocent devices would soon blow over, and now that STB and PMP manufacturer MediaREADY (formerly Video Without Boundaries) has jumped the shark with its painful new attempt to be hip -- the, (shudder), Bling Player -- we feel that iced-out gadgets are finally headed for the great recycling center in the sky. As its name so obviously suggests, the Bling Player is a tiny 2GB DAP with fake jewels studded to the sides and, for some odd reason, a skull and crossbones-adorned dog tag dangling from a chintzy chain. Embarrassing appearance aside, this player does offer up some pretty decent specs, including an FM tuner with recording, built-in mic, USB 2.0 connectivity, and MPEG-4 playback on the impossibly small 1.8-inch TFT LCD (no resolution is listed, and frankly, we don't really wanna know). Two hundred bucks is what it'll cost you to give up your soul when the Bling Player goes on sale next month, or you could just have some cheap fun right now by laughing at a press release which describes this atrocity as "high-fashion," "classy," and "ultra-stylish."

Reports of advances in memory storage densities aren't all that surprising anymore -- after all, storage devices have continually gotten both smaller and more capacious since IBM kicked out the first hard drive in 1956 -- but it's still nice to learn that the NAND flash used in our DAPs, cellphones, and soon laptops and desktops will break the terabyte barrier within the next decade. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the National Nano Fab Center are claiming success in building the world's first NAND flash chip using an 8nm fabrication process, which could eventually lead to capacities as large as one terabyte in a package 1/25th the size of Samsung's 40nm 32GB unit. The breakthrough was realized by merging nanowires with silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon technology, and although it might seem like huge iPods are right around the corner, the research team still faces problems such as shrinking the area where data is saved. In other words, your gear isn't out of date quite yet, but you can rest assured that it will be soon.

We have some good news and some bad news Optimus fanboys, which do you want first? The bad news? Ok, here goes: the Optimus isn't being shown at CeBIT after all. Yeah, we know, we just caught a huge whiff of rather depressing vapor, but what can you do? If it's not ready to show it's not ready to show. Oh, and if that's not a boot to the gut then how 'bout this: it's not $1,200 anymore... it's now $1,490. Ouch! Pre-orders start in April with delivery in November/December 2007. Still, there was a bit of good news that came from our meeting with Artemy Lebedev and Dimitry Tosy here at CeBIT in Hannover. First, the Optimus 103 gets a name change. While we were hoping for the Optimus Prime (there's more than meets the eye), it looks like they've settled on Optimus Maximus (the god of gods). Also, all the keys will in fact be OLED with an expected life span of only 5 years, depending upon use of course. Each 32 x 32 resolution OLED will remain stationary. Instead, the key-press mechanics are executed by a plastic cap which slides around the display like a sleeve to keep the wear and tear on the OLEDs to a minimum. Break a key? No problem, replacements will be offered for $10 a pop. Sorry, no freebies in the box like your Xmas tree lights -- we tried. And if you think that $1,490 is a bit too pricey for a 5-year keyboard, take heart: "two or three" additional keyboards are in the works with fewer programmable keys and a sub $1,000 price tag.

Back in the 90's OEM PC manufacturers used to make some easy money by charging ISPs like AOL, Prodigy, and CompuServe to have dial-up software preloaded on their machines, and now the new millenium is finding the white box makers once again offering premium desktop and browser space to the highest bidder -- but this time around it's search giants Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft that are jockeying for space on your new machine. With the two largest manufacturers having already been spoken for -- Google famously partnered with Dell and Yahoo got in bed with both HP and Acer -- Microsoft's Live tools were running a very distant third until Redmond decided to look overseas and court Chinese powerhouse Lenovo. Well in a presumably nine- and possibly even ten-figure deal announced today, Lenovo will indeed be shipping all of its machines (including the ThinkPad and ThinkCentre lines) with the Windows Live toolbar and browsers pointed at Live Search, starting with rigs that roll off the line later this month. As you'd expect, the company is spinning this partnership as a big win for consumers, arguing that it "allows our customers to better communicate with us, in addition to giving them additional services." Well said, executive director of strategic alliances Peter Gaucher. In reality Lenovo just gets a big payday and Microsoft will likely see some boost in Live usage from newbs who don't know one search engine from the others; meanwhile, the rest of us will just have to take a few extra seconds to delete all the crapware and change our homepages.

The always confident in itself Super Talent has announced new batch of solid state SATA drives, coming in the usual 1.8-inch, 2.5-inch, and 3.5-inch form factors, and ranging in size from 4GB to 128GB. Broken down, the petite 1.8-inch drives will give you between 4GB and 32GB of storage, while going up to the 2.5-inch model will give you a bit of extra breathing room, ranging in size from 8GB to 64GB. The real expansiveness, however, comes when you step things up to the 3.5-inch drives, which start at 64GB and go all the way to 128GB, although that's slightly less impressive than A-DATA's SSD drives, which manage to cram those same 128 gigabytes into a 2.5-inch form factor. Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing just yet, but it looks like we should know soon enough, with the drives set to roll out sometime next month.

Mitsubishi has announced a bundle of new LCD TVs for the Japanese market today, catering to both high end customers and those less so with its new REAL MZ and REAL MX series sets. The MZ models are the bigger and more capable of the two, coming in 40 and 46-inch varieties, each boasting the coveted 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, with a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and the usual complement of inputs, including a pair of HDMI ports. The MX series takes things down a notch in both size and specs, available in 26, 32, and 37-inch models, with a slightly less impressive 1,366 x 768 resolution, and HDMI inputs on the two larger models but none on the lowly 26-incher. Look for all five of the TVs to be available in Japan next month, coming in between 150,000 Yen and 430,000 Yen, or rougly $1,300 to $3,700.

The Walkman phone's sporty orange trim gets switched out for a classy attempt in gold on Sony Ericsson's newest rendition, the W660. At a svelte 0.57-inches, the UMTS 2100 and GPRS 900/1800/1900 phone really packs in the goods with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, FM radio support, a 2 megapixel camera, web browsing, RSS feeds, and a 512 MB Memory Stick Micro (upgradeable). It has a 2-inch color TFT display and totes random extras like TrackID, a music identification service, and a Picture Blogging function that allows you to send snapshots directly to your personal blog. To top off the lifestyle angle on this phone, Sony Ericsson has embellished the pants offa this one, with the aforementioned gold trim on both glossy color options, Record Black and Rose Red. The Rose Red (geez, what's up with the cranberry hype?) model jazzes it up a bit more with its floral-themed relief pattern on the backside. For those of you who are more concerned with performance, you'll get up to 6 hours of talk time on GSM, up to 2.5 hours with 3G, or a max of 25 hours of music listening. Expect to peep these newbies in select markets by Q2 of this year.

With CeBIT just around the corner, Samsung isn't wasting any time and has already announced their new lineup for Europe; the M87, R87 and Q97 series of TVs. The M-series -- available in 37, 40, 46, and 52-inch sizes -- are all 1080p and include 3 HDMI ports, even one on the side for your cameras and camcorders; for those of you without HDMI outputs, there is a 9-1 card reader. As expected the contrast ratios get better year to year and this year's 32-inch and 37-inch models feature an 8,000:1 contrast ratio, while the 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch models are at 15,000:1. The new sets will be available in the UK in April with a MSRP of £1,200 ($2322), £1,300 ($2516), £2,000 ($3870) and £2,500 ($4838.00). Samsung hasn't given up on plasma, and new this year is the Q-series, available in 46-inch and 50-inch models with a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 -- really shows you how far LCD technology has come when Samsung's LCDs and plasmas share the same spec. The R-series is the 720p lineup and ranges in size from 19-inch at £400 ($774) all the way to 40-inch, and even a one in white for those who don't like piano black.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
Even though 1seg digital TV hasn't really taken off as some might have hoped -- poor reception underground and in moving vehicles renders it nearly useless for Japanese commuters -- manufacturers keep on stuffing this feature into cellphones, PMPs, and portable GPS receivers. Most times the extra tuner is little more than a "value-added" function, but with Sony's new XDV-100 modern-day Watchman, 1seg is the main attraction. At 2.8 inches, though, the screen isn't much bigger than some of your larger smartphones, and the 320 x 240 resolution is certainly nothing you wouldn't find on any number of other devices. Your 40,000 yen also get you a docking cradle and AM / FM radio, which would seem to be the least they could throw in for almost $340. If for some reason you feel like dropping serious cash for a tiny set that you'll only be watching near the window of your Japanese hotel room, April 10th is when the black-or-silver XDV-100 hits stores.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

So it seems pretty obvious when you think about it: if you're gonna go out and spend $1000+ on a projector / DVD player / iPod dock shaped like R2D2 from those Star Wars movies, you can't really hook it up to just any old speakers, now can you? Sure, some nice tower speakers from Energy or Boston Acoustics would sound pretty great, but if you want your home theater to have that authentic Jedi feel to it, it would seem that something more thematic / tacky is in order. Well, projector (and matching R2 Skype webcam) manufacturer Nikko has apparently come to this realization as well, and probably due to the unexpected popularity of its products tucked into a corner of South Hall at CES, has come up with a 2.1 speaker system shaped like a pair of Tie-Fighters. Scheduled to launch at CeBIT, not much is known about this unique setup other than the fact that bass comes courtesy of a dedicated subwoofer emblazoned with the classic Star Wars logo. Check out a few different angles in the gallery below, and stay tuned as we attempt to once again track down Nikko's booth for more in-depth coverage of what will likely be the sleeper hit of this year's show.

So long as there are fanboys roaming the streets (and electronics aisles), weird fetishes and unashamed overkill will still have their places, but it's not too often that a gaming addiction finds a home on Broadway. In The Game Boy, Matthew Gandolfo and Robin Rothstein's family-friendly musical, a well-taught lad dubbed Chase purportedly falls a bit too head over heels for his dear Game Boy, which presumably leads to all kinds of childhood development issues. According to the production notes, the kiddo is simply consumed in the pixelated universe, and strives to "always being the best," regardless of the real folks he ignores in the process. As predicted, this behavior eventually results in a life of loneliness and dread, probably forcing poor Chase to switch off the Nintendo handheld and seek out his long lost friends. Of course, his parents could have just shipped him over Amsterdam to remedy the issue, but if you're interested in seeing the outcome yourself, be sure to hit up the Vital Theater Company in New York City from now until April 22nd.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Look, Eragon is great and all, with his pretty boy hair and that whole dragon thing he's got going on, but we wouldn't exactly describe him as ideal representation of a complete Euro-PS3 backwards compatibility list. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the folks at Cynamite found, who nabbed a pre-release Emotion Engine-free PS3 for testing a couple weeks before launch, and confirmed some of the worst fears about the PAL PS3's backwards compatibility. Granted, Sony could (and hopefully does) have a major software revision up its sleeve to boost emulation capabilities of the PS3 at launch, but they tested the top 12 PS2 titles in Europe (including such faves as God of War, MGS 3: Snake Eater and Guitar Hero 2) only to find that the sole game on the list that would even launch was Eragon. (The other titles popped up a screen telling users to hope on future software updates and to refer to Sony's compatibility list.) Time is running out, but we're gonna keep the faith. Sony definitely knows better than to promise 1200-some-odd backward compatible titles and deliver on what could mathematically be estimated as only about 100.
