- O2 Germany announces new HTCs as Xda "terra" and "nova"

Though O2 spends plenty of time getting cozy with Quanta for its Windows Mobile needs, that doesn't mean they've thrown HTC to the curb. The latest two HTCs to get the O2 treatment -- in Germany, anyway -- will be the Herald and Elf, released as the Xda "terra" and "nova" respectively. As you might recall, the Herald is the facelifted Wizard, replacing O2's own Xda mini S and offering all the same slide-out QWERTY action in a 17 millimeter shell; 3G data is sadly missing, though O2 is going to one-up the competition here by rolling out Windows Mobile 6 Professional on this bad boy out of the gate -- expect it in May for €150 (about $200). Meanwhile, the Xda nova (also a 2.5G device) brings Windows Mobile to the masses with a relatively low price point -- €100, about $130 -- while still managing to pack 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD expansion, and version six of Microsoft's ubiquitous platform. Look for it a month after its Xda terra stablemate in June.

We've know the Skype tinkerers are out there, and while we caught wind of a DIY cordless Skype phone project about two years ago, we think it's about time for some fresh efforts to surface. Thankfully, we're apparently not alone in those sentiments, as the crafty gurus at Instructables have devised an (admittedly iffy) way to morph a nearly-useless cordless landline telephone into one of the "portable Skype" variety. Essentially, all you need is a traditional cordless phone that you don't mind destroying, a soldering iron (and subsequently, a steady hand), a few 3.5-millimeter cables, and a dash of luck. Although there seems to be a bit too much risk involved in this hack-job for us, we certainly wouldn't mind any of you engineering folks to give it a go and see what turns out, but be sure to read through the fine print -- we're pretty sure "electrical shock" and "going up an smoke" are both byproducts of bad karma mixed in with this concoction.

So it seems pretty obvious when you think about it: if you're gonna go out and spend $1000+ on a projector / DVD player / iPod dock shaped like R2D2 from those Star Wars movies, you can't really hook it up to just any old speakers, now can you? Sure some nice tower speakers from Energy or Boston Acoustics would sound pretty great, but if you want your home theater to have that authentic Jedi feel to it, it would seem that something more thematic / tacky is in order. Well projector (and matching R2 Skype webcam) manufacturer Nikko has apparently come to this realization as well, and probably due to the unexpected popularity of its products tucked into a corner of South Hall at CES, has come up with a 2.1 speaker system shaped like a pair of Tie-Fighters. Scheduled to launch at CeBIT, not much is known about this unique setup, other than the fact that bass comes courtesy of a dedicated subwoofer emblazoned with the classic Star Wars logo. The new X-960 and X-970T portable GPS units from ViaMichelin don't exactly break new ground, but they're both looking moderately stylish, and boast of enough specs to get by. On the low end, the X-960 keeps it simple with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 300MHz Samsung processor and 2 hours of battery life. The little guy measures 0.8-inches thick, and comes in "individual country" or "all of Europe" flavors for €229 ($301 US) and €299 ($393 US), respectively. Things get stepped up a bit with the X-970T (pictured), which sports a QVGA 3.5-inch touchscreen, 400MHz Samsung processor and 3 hour battery life, along with an external RDS/TMC receiver for traffic info and a hands-free Bluetooth setup. The device runs CE 5.0, holds 64MB of RAM, 128MB of ROM, and comes in similar SKUs to its little brother: €329 ($433 US) for maps of a single European country, €399 for all of Europe ($525 US). Italians have been getting a taste of that sweet over-the-air digital TV since last year, with tiny phone screens being their primary and possibly sole method of content intake. Well that won't be the case for too much longer, as mobile carrier 3 has announced a partnership with manufacturer Quantum that will bring a dedicated, 4.3-inch portable DVB-H device to the TV-mad public. Called the QTM 1000, this PMP will be able to pull down 12 live stations including Sky, RIA, and Mediaset, and is said to function as a navigation unit as well (details on that aspect of its functionality are slim to none, however). Also no word so far on pricing, but perhaps we'll learn more as the scheduled release window of "this spring" gets closer.

So long as there are fanboys roaming the streets (and electronics aisles), weird fetishes and unashamed overkill will still have their places, but it's not too often that a gaming addiction finds a home on Broadway. In The Game Boy, Matthew Gandolfo and Robin Rothstein's family-friendly musical, a well-taught lad dubbed Chase purportedly falls a bit too head over heels for his dear Game Boy, which presumably leads to all kinds of childhood development issues. According to the production notes, the kiddo is simply consumed in the pixelated universe, and strives to "always being the best," regardless of the real folks he ignores in the process. As predicted, this behavior eventually results in a life of loneliness and dread, probably forcing poor Chase to switch off the Nintendo handheld and seek out his long lost friends. Of course, his parents could have just shipped him over Amsterdam to remedy the issue, but if you're interested in seeing the outcome yourself, be sure to hit up the Vital Theater Company in New York City from now until April 22nd.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
