- Toshiba's Tecra M9 laptop to get HSDPA?

Granted, nothing looks to be set in stone just yet, but if FCC documentation leads to results, Toshiba's Tecra M9 could be getting HSDPA. Apparently, the FCC has tested a version of the lappie with a WWAN module built right in, and more specifically, the test reports show that a module manufactured by Tyco Electronics is the culprit. The "CDMA Cell-PCS Module" reportedly supports GSM 850/1900, GPRS, EGPRS, WCDMA 850/1900, and WCDMA+HSDPA, and while we've no idea when these newly-equipped machines will be launching, it ought not be long now.

Not too long after Dell tooted its own horn when releasing the energy-efficient OptiPlex 755, Lenovo is hopping on the green PC bandwagon with a power-sipping machine of its own. The ThinkCentre A61e is hailed as "the company's smallest, quietest and most energy-efficient desktop yet," and can be equipped with a 45-watt AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core or Sempron single-core CPU. Additionally, this system is Lenovo's first to tout the oh-so-coveted EPEAT Gold status, and it can even be powered by "an optional solar panel." The ThinkCentre A61e will start at just $399, but picking one up will require you to turn a blind eye to just how hideous this thing truly is.

Sony's showing off a whole range of headphones at its dealer convention in Japan this week, covering everything from earbuds to Bluetooth headsets to full-size cans. On the latter front, and likely of most note, are the company's new MDR-DS7000 headphones, which promise 7.1 channel audio (or some approximation thereof) and Dolby Digital, DTS, and AAC decoding. What's more, the headphones are also wireless, relying on the oft-used 2.4GHz to throw all that sound across the room. Look for those to hit Japan in November for ¥30,000 ($260). Also on display are a the DR-BT25NX and DR-BT30QA Bluetooth headphones, the former consisting of some earphones and a neckstrap contraption, and the later opting for headphones of the clip-on variety (check 'em out after the break). Rounding out the lot are some noise-canceling earphones, a couple of low-cost earbuds, and Sony's previously announced PFR-V1 "personal field speaker" headset. Those who got a kick (ahem) out of MyDo's Bururu glasses will surely appreciate the firm's latest spectacles, which seem to function pretty much like Oakley's Thump sans the tint. The eyeSonics reportedly utilizes "bone conduction speaker equipment," non-slip arms, a 3.5-millimeter input (no Bluetooth?), and are set to arrive in four different colors. Interestingly enough, these bad boys aren't exactly cheap, and we'd probably just stick with separate devices before we coughed up the ¥38,000 ($336) required to neatly combine headphones and glasses.

Finally, Sony is striving to incorporate its technology into our "everything everywhere" lifestyles with a stereo speaker that matches our fast-paced, Jetsons-esque, 21st century "chill sessions." What are we talking about? Mainly, the company's new non-directional speaker prototype, a thin, tall, acrylic tube with a woofer at the bottom, a mid range "unit" at the top, and a tweeter created through the use of the vibrating, resin cylinder. Apparently, the speaker is capable of projecting sound in a omnidirectional fashion due to it's circular shape and unique speaker placement, though there's no telling how accurately it reproduces Mastodon's harmonized guitars. The speaker is self-powered (i.e., active), and as far as we know, Sony has no immediate plans for release, Stateside or otherwise.

While whispers and supposed shots of Motorola's ROKR U9 have been around for a tick, the PEBL-icious handset -- along with the similarly styled U9 and the W5 clamshell -- are finally getting detailed. Reportedly, the U9 will tout a 1.4-inch 160 x 128 resolution OLED (externally), two-megapixel camera, GSM / GPRS / EDGE connectivity, a 1.8-inch QVGA screen (internal), microSD expansion slot, USB, Bluetooth, and "touch sensitive keys." The U3 looks to be an entry-level sibling with a less attractive external display and a VGA camera, while the ROKR W5 will purportedly include a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 1.9-inch 220 x 176 resolution display, 20MB of internal storage, a microSD slot, 96 x 85 pixel external screen, miniUSB, Bluetooth, A2DP support, and quad-band GSM connectivity. No word on pricing or release dates just yet, but do click on for a few more pictures.

Hacha, makers of the familiar looking PA20 and PC20, is apparently planning to unleash the players on the world in the very near future. According to reports, the two PMPs will be hitting shelves sometime around September 22nd (or earlier), though right now we've only got those words to hang on. If you'll recall, the $175 PA20 (pictured) is a 3.2-inch, touchscreen media player, with 4GB of memory, the ability to play tons of media formats (MP3, AVI, XviD, WMA, WAV, APE, FLAC), and a microSD expansion slot for an additional 4GB of storage. The $170 PC20 has all the same features, though its 3-inch screen isn't touch-sensitive, and it totally rips off the iPhone's design. Go figure. Both are available for pre-order right now from the Hacha "fan" website.

Right on schedule, Sharp is updating its Mebius laptop line once again, and this time its AMD getting all the love. The 15.4-inch trio of machines include Windows Vista, a WXGA panel, ATI's Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics set, between 1GB and 2GB of RAM, a 120GB SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, Ethernet, WiFi, PCMCIA, SD / xD card slots, VGA out, audio in / out, four USB 2.0 sockets, and a 4-pin FireWire connector. On the low-end, the Sempron 3400+ powered PC-WE40V will ring up at ¥130,000 ($1,147), while the mid-range PC-WE50V gets the same CPU as well as Office 2007 for ¥150,000 ($1,324). The PC-WT70V, however, gets blessed with a Turion 64 X2 TL-52 and goes for ¥180,000 ($1,589).

Following up on the original Cordless MediaBoard, Logitech has recently unveiled the Bluetooth-enabled MediaBoard Pro and tossed in the Cordless Vantage Headset for good measure. These PS3 peripherals make chatting it up whilst gaming quite an easy feat, and while the rechargeable headset provides "an ambidextrous behind-the-head design and an adjustable noise canceling microphone," the MediaBoard Pro sports a piano black finish, a dedicated Menu button, and of course, the circle / square / X / triangle buttons as well. As for the headset (shown after the break), expect it to land this November in the US (December for Europe) for $79.99, while the new 'board should hit both markets in October for the same price.

Now that you've gone and pre-ordered Rock Band, here's a tidbit about what will actually be included. According to Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos, the guitar that comes bundled in with the Xbox 360 version will not be wireless, as he reportedly states that "the cost of wireless technology on the Microsoft side is higher." Notably, the PS3 bundle will indeed include a wireless axe, and before you get too riled up, Xbox 360 users will still be able to purchase a wireless shredder separately if it's a make-or-break scenario for ya. Oh, and the drums and microphone will be wired on both platforms, but Xbox 360 buyers will purportedly get a USB hub thrown in to hook it all up.

Well folks, you can't say we didn't warn you. Palm's European wing announced today that the Treo 500v was really real, and headed onto the monolithic Vodafone network in October. As expected, the new model will be coming in two colors, a bright white and gray finish (called Glacier White), as well as a muted charcoal tone (known as, surprise, Charcoal Grey), and will be running Windows Mobile 6. The phone will not have a touchscreen, as we reported, but will rock 3G / UMTS data (not HSDPA), have a 2-megapixel camera (so at least we know Palm isn't completely recycling older phones' guts), 256MB of onboard memory (150MB for users), plus a microSD slot and Bluetooth 2.0. Everything else about the phone should feel like standard territory, as Palm doesn't seem to be offering anything in the way of software that's different, though this phone could (and should) find some fans with those looking in the direction of BlackJacks, Qs, and Dashes. Still, we can't say we're not a little deflated... maybe the rumored "800" will blow our collective minds.

It's nearly fall and that can mean only one thing: er, new mice and webcams from Microsoft. Yeah, about as exciting as moms taking you shopping for new big-boy school trousers. Granted, the 1.3 megapixel LifeCam NX-3000 and 2 megapixel LifeCam VX-7000 are decent and all as are the new $50 Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 and $50 Wireless (RF) Notebook Laser Mouse 7000. But the action, Jackson, comes with the October release of the $100 Mobile Memory Mouse 8000 (pictured). We're talking both 2.4GHz and Bluetooth packed into the transceiver (toggled with a switch) with 1GB of flash baked-in allowing it to pull double-duty as a flash drive. Nice, but the laser mouse itself features a 3-contact, magnetically-held charging cable which automatically senses whether you're using a rechargeable AAA (included) or off-the-shelf Alkaline when in a jam. Snap the transceiver in-place beneath the mouse and everything powers off presto quick. Peep the gallery for a healthy mix of hands-on and glamor-shot action.

So you thought the $1,536 Optimus Maximus keyboard was a tad expensive? Peep this: the €20,000 (about $28,000) XYNERGI programmable controller from Fairlight. To be fair, you get a hell of a lot more than just a keyboard for your 28-grand as the kit includes Fairlight's CC-1 digital media engine as well. While it's targeted at media professionals, it also integrates like a peach with Microsoft Office and all your other Windows applications. Better yet, the custom key mappings are said to "intelligently" adjust depending upon the "mode the operator is in." However, judging by the video (after the break), intelligence seems defined by your ability to find (and push) the function button.

We wouldn't guesstimate that OCZ's newest duo of flash drives were the toughest we've ever seen, but the styling alone is pretty intimidating, we must say. Both drives reportedly tout weatherproof "rubber tread" housings and can withstand being submerged in water, and while the ATV will hum along "at mainstream speeds," the ATV Turbo promises read rates of up to 35MB/per second and write rates of up to 30MB/per second. No official pricing details look to be available just yet, but both iterations should be available shortly in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB sizes.

The folks in England just can't catch a break. As if hovering surveillance drones, camcorder-wielding traffic wardens and helmet cam-equipped officers aren't enough to keep you on the straight and narrow, London's city of Westminster is apparently looking to "install networked security cameras that can recognize parking permits and the plates of offending vehicles." Essentially, the system would enable parking violators to be ticketed without an actual human witnessing the offense, and it's being dubbed "the most significant application to be deployed on the Westminster's WiFi network." Eventually, the council plans to roll out about 250 of these sure-to-be-hated cameras, and it should ruin enough people's days to "pay for itself in two to three years."

HaRRo over on the iPhone Dev Team has already upped the ante -- just hours after the release of the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock software, he's already got an early beta version of the graphical one-click iPhone-based software cooking. We tested out an early build (sorry folks, it's not quite ready for release yet) and can confirm that despite the visual glitches you see above, it's already a fully functional one-click unlock solution, not too different from IPSF's paid unlock software. Unfortunately, you still have to actually get the app onto the phone and go through the faux-activation process with your SIM afterward (and re-enable YouTube, if you so choose), but this is the first major step in automating the process of quickly and easily unlocking everybody's iPhone. More information -- including the final build of the GUI unlock -- will be posted as it comes to HaRRo's iPhone unlock site (hit the read link).

Ouch, that was fast. Apple didn't seem to want to let it get around that they've taken a completely neutral stance on 3rd party application development for the iPhone, and apparently got back with Gearlog to clarify that future iPhone "software updates will most likely break" 3rd party app compatibility. Not ignore, not possibly break -- most likely break. In other words, don't set your hopes too high that the NES games you're enjoying on your iPhone today will be around tomorrow, since it sounds like Apple won't be playing Switzerland after all.

It may be raining on AT&T's parade today but the sun is out and blasting Japan with plenty of Blu-ray. Four new Sony Bravia recorders in fact, capable of burning 50GB dual-layer, BD-R/RE discs with an additional disk packing between 250GB and 500GB of storage depending upon model selected. The ¥200,000 (about $1,755) top-end BDZ-X90 model brings 2x digital and 2x analog tuners, gold-plated HDMI 1080p capable of 60fps or 24fps output in DeepColor, and a DLNA-based "Sony Room Link" server function for streaming your media around the house. All use MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoding with support for lossless TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and hi-definition bitstream output. Hell, they even include support for attached AVCHD camcorders. Damn. On sale in Japan November 8th.

Scientists at the always-progressive Johns Hopkins have been working on an electronic, inner-ear "balancing" device that could help correct problems like unsteadiness, disequilibrium or wobbly vision (no, really). The device -- which couples a head-mounted, matchbook-size box, and up to eight surgically implanted electrodes -- corrects problems by measuring and transmitting 3D balance information to the brain via the vestibular nerve. Researchers say they're working on downsizing and hermetically sealing the implant so that it can fit inside the head and beneath the skin. Up until now, the devices have been tested on chinchillas, whom scientists cruelly dosed with an antibiotic that creates balancing problems (we suppose there were no wobbly people around), then attached implants to the animals and discovered that they "partially regained their vision-stabilizing reflex." While we don't condone testing on adorable rodents here at Engadget, we do love a Borg-esque head attachment from time to time.

If you're like us, you're furiously unlocking every iPhone in sight at the moment, but what you might not know is the story behind the hack. It all started Monday when iPhoneSIMfree was finally released. Hackers immediately bought up licenses and started looking into how the thing ticked, and found something rather surprising: the app flashes to the baseband chip -- something the iPhone Dev Team had originally said couldn't be done at all without hardware hackery, diverting effort away from such attempts.

It looks like the battle's officially over between iPhoneSIMfree and the numerous unique groups of open source hackers trying to software SIM unlock the iPhone. As we've been following in our previous post on the topic, earlier this afternoon iUnlock, the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock app, was released to the underground just 74 days after the iPhone's release. Developed by the iPhone Dev Team, it's not (yet) for the faint of heart and it takes a little longer to do its magic than iPhoneSIMfree's method, but it works.
To pull this off you'll need iUnlock + nor + the .fls file, which is available in ZIPs all over. We've got the app here, but this package doesn't include all of the files necessary. Good list of links here, or try here, here, here, here, and here.
For the how-to, just hit up one of those guides down below. Naturally, we offer zero guarantees that any of this will work. (Read: don't whine to us if your iPhone gets bricked.) Big ups to the iphone.unlock crew, Draken, and, of course, the iPhone Dev Team. Let us know in comments if this technique works for you.
Update: We've confirmed the hack! Yes, it's fully restore-resistant, too, which is great news. We'll get you all the juicy proof in a few, but we have indeed managed to software unlock an iPhone with iUnlock. Also, HaRRo says the app should be out "very soon" to make this easier on the noobs.
Update 2: Depending on activation method, YouTube might not be working after the unlock -- ours isn't. This is, of course, expected behavior. There's a Windows script here that should hopefully fix you up (again, we don't make any guarantees), but Mac users will have to look elsewhere. Also, alongside the Mac GUI iUnlock app in the works, the iPhone Dev Team is prepping a Windows version, a simple bash script and an iPhone app -- and eventually an all-in-one app that can do everything from the Jailbreak to the unlock.
Update 3: We've posted our terminal output from using the hack after the break. Go ahead. Nerd out. Also, the graphical version isn't out quiet yet, but we've got the first image of it above. Check it out.
